Forget Paris: 1,600 New Coal-fired Power Plants are Planned or Under Construction in 62 Countries

Here’s a small sample of how many coal plants there are in the world today.

    • The EU has 468 plants building 27 more for a total of 495
    • Turkey has 56 plants building 93 more total 149
    • South Africa has 79 building 24 more total 103
    • India has 589 building 446 more total 1036
    • Philippines has 19 building 60 more total 79
    • South Korea has 58 building 26 more total 84
    • Japan has 90 building 45 more total 135
    • AND CHINA has 2363 building 1171 total 3534

Here come our AUSTRALIAN politicians that are going to shut down our 6 remaining plants and save the planet!!

  1. Why are our politicians treating us like mugs?

Are they trying to be leaders in “how to stuff your country”?

It’s time to bite the bullet and build more coal fired power stations.

Maybe public companies could be formed where retirees could invest their super funds to build new coal fire powered stations. Power from those stations would not be supplied to the Greenies, they can use unreliable renewables. Just a thought.

AUSTRALIA is planning to shut down their remaining 6 plants and save the planet !!

    Go Australia

    1. I saw a similar article in the Guardian, that leftie rag, same but the only difference was that the G admitted that the story was more than six years old. That means it pre-dates all of the radical shifts in fossil fuel policy following the Paris Agreement signed in late 2015!

No mention of China’s determination to shut down as many power stations as it builds. No mention of the Central Indian Electricity Authority plan of December 2016, which saw the number of planned coal fired generators slashed by 90%- replaced by a massive shift to 365 GW of new clean energy sources!
Oh, and by the way, your numbers are so dumb, they actually claim Australia has six coal-fired power stations. God love us! You can’t even get that right! As at 2019, we have 19!

      Who’s pulling it?

      1. China’s 2016 declaration about coal closures and renewables is not visible in their current 5 year plan: “On 11 October, Premier Li Keqiang chaired a meeting of the National Energy Commission in Beijing that emphasised China’s energy security and coal utilisation and downplayed the importance of a rapid transition away from fossil fuels.”
        https://www.chinadialogue.net/article/show/single/en/11642-Is-coal-power-winning-the-US-China-trade-war-?utm_source=CCNet+Newsletter&utm_campaign=d264cc8250-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2019_11_15_01_58&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_fe4b2f45ef-d264cc8250-36463949&mc_cid=d264cc8250&mc_eid=16a1aa27a8
However even if they never build another coal fired power station, current capacity of (973,000 MW is close to half the world’s total and dwarfs Australia’s 22,000 MW capacity. And if they do go ahead with more coal mines and power plants, they may no longer need to buy coal from Australia and all coal mining could cease …

      2. You actually believe the Chinese, let alone the Guardian? ‘Shut down as many as it builds’? Doesn’t that sound like so much horse shit? Coal is at record prices as of September 2020! There’s a reason for that, it’s called ‘demand’.

  2. Where do we find 79 coal fired power stations in South Africa?
With a bit of google work I come to no more than 18.
Of those Medupi and Kusile stations are still under construction.
And building 24 more looks impressive, but they have a lot of plans there but absolutely no money.
The only (exept 480MW) state owned operator does not even get enough in to pay for the interest on their debts. (google ‘Eskom debt interest’)
Hope the rest of the list is more accurate cause I’m on your side with closing powerstations before we have anything sensible (nuclear?) to replace but you have me worried here.

    Kind regards, Sjirk

    1. Greetings Joseph.

The ancient Egyptians had a global temperature much hotter than ours. The ancient Romans had it hotter. the Medieval people had it hotter. We have passed the peak of our own solar-induced warm period and our global climate is about to cool.

The global warming panic… panic… panic… emergency… alarm… ‘sky is falling’ panic…!!!! has been promoted by international financiers who want to seize countries’ nature assets if they cannot repay their debts. They establish penalties and rewards that lead to trading in CO2 shares although the total CO2 in the atmosphere is only 0.04% and human CO2 is only 3.65% of that. Australia is responsible for 2% of the 3.65%.

These financier fraudsters are desperate to have the world quickly lock itself into their fraud. Soon we will all be aware of the global cooling. CO2 is irrelevant to global temperature.

        1. No he’s not ! CO2 has only a very small contribution to global warming and 95% of that ceases to increase above 200 PPM CO2 .

          1. Greetings. Thanks Don. Suggest that Sherlock Holmes move to somewhere cold to save himsef from imminent warming…warming…warming……………warming.

    2. God help you, you poor naïve soul. China, the world’s largest “polluter” by a wide margin will burn coal as long as it is cheap. Why? Because NO communist country cares a twit about humanity OR what others think of them. The left can criticize them, jump up and down and act out all their tantrums until the cows come home. Nothing they say or do will have any effect on China.

When will the climate change believers admit they are afraid of China and give free passes to India. Absent their 100% co-operation the entire climate change agenda fails. And it fails miserably. And those are facts, not rhetoric.

      1. All that may happen is a normal increase in sea level from glacier melt. They have frozen and melted untold times over the past billion years with lots of activity for the past 100,000.
So, if you live on the water the water will rise. But I didn’t say, hey build right on the ocean. It has never changed levels. Oops. It does go up and down especially during an Ice Age which I fully understand that we’re still in this cycle. The planet is not Static. Nature is not Static. Weather is not Static. It all changes.

    3. Please provide some believable, scientific proof that the human race will go extinct in 9 years. We have a better chance of wiping out most mankind with the disease that China created. The current one is spreading faster, but is less dangerous. Maybe the next one will be faster and more dangerous.
      Just my 2¢

  3. 19 may be the right number of plants/stations for Australia total but their power output is very different, a total of 20,000 MW compared to China’s 973,000 and India’s 220,000 MW
(NSW 5 stations with 10,240 MW capacity, QLD has 8 with just 8,000 MW and WA has 5, with 2100 MW capacity)
The ‘remaining six power plants’ appear to be just be those with firmed up closure plans? Perhaps Graeme might like to comment?

  4. Coal and CO2 generally is a diversion.
Global ecocide is what ‘climate change’ is diverting us from….
we have lost 80% of old growth forest; we have lost 1/3 of arable land in last 40 years . .
    we are losing species daily.
Oxygen levels in large cities are between 12-17% (should be 21%)..

    1. Greetings. gavin. Yes, save the environment, save the forests and every other life. We all want that.

  5. These Chinese corporations are building or planning to build more than 700 new coal plants at home and around the world, some in countries that today burn little or no coal, according to tallies compiled by Urgewald, an environmental group based in Berlin. Many of the plants are in China, but by capacity, roughly a fifth of these new coal power stations are in other countries. Over all, 1,600 coal plants are planned or under construction in 62 countries, according to Urgewald’s tally, which uses data from the Global Coal Plant Tracker portal. The new plants would expand the world’s coal-fired power capacity by 43 percent.

    1. So if the US stops driving gas autos the world will be saved…Answer is No Way to miniscule.
